Jets, jets, jets…what can a person say about these
technologically driven, and amazing flying machines. Even
though I have flown several different types of RC aircraft for
many years, I have never personally gone into the jet
spectrum of this hobby. I have seen hundreds of different jet
turbine aircraft fly, and it is just as exciting for me years later to
see one fly, as it was the first time I witnessed one take to the
air. For anyone that has never seen an RC jet, the answer to
your first question is, YES. All of these have a real jet turbines
powering them like in a full size jet. They use kerosene or jet
fuel, and they all have retractable landing gear. Some of the
jets are scale aircraft, and are smaller replicas of full size
jets. However, some of them are sport models, and are not
meant to duplicate a specific large scale aircraft. Either way,
they all have real working jet turbines, are very loud, extremely
fast and impress every kind of spectator.
One extremely cool addition to a few of the jets in more recent
years is thrust vectoring. This allows the pilot to change the
direction of the exhaust, which can dramatically increase the
capability of advanced aerobatics. In fact, these jets can hover
in place perfectly still, and spin completely around while
hovering. Another cool trick is hovering the jet for a bit, then
having it snap forward into a forward flip, and come back to a
perfect hover. This can also be done repeatedly as many
times as the pilot wants. This trick is also sometimes
performed in a rearward flip, coming back to a perfect hover,
or combining forward and rearward flips. One of the neat
features of this type of aerobatics is the dimension of sound
the jet turbines make. The turbines are very loud, and the
constant directional change of the jet nozzle, from all the
flipping, dramatically changes the loudness of the sound. So
performing flips, flat spins, and other neat aerobatic stunts is
all part RC jets.
They say that a picture says a thousand words, so I am going
to let pictures tell the rest of the story. Please go to our Jet
Rally Photos page to check out all the pictures I took at the
rally. Most are photos of the jets waiting to be flown, or under
the pilots tents being serviced. Only a few are of actual flight
because it is very difficult of taking a picture of something
flying 200+ miles per hours. For anyone that has never been
to the New England Jet Rally come back to our informative
website next spring to get the date of next years Jet Rally. We
will likely hold it in late August again, and you don’t want to
miss it. And, for those of you that had the rare chance to go to
this rally please tell all of your friends and family about the fun
time you had, so they can come next year. NOW GO TO THE
JET RALLY PHOTOS PAGE.
Well, the Wachusett Barnstormers of Gardner, MA, did it
again. We held the 6th Annual New England Jet Rally, which
was a huge success. Our club first wants to thank the
thousands of spectators that came from all over New
England, and some farther than that, to see remote control
turbine jets fly at 200+ MPH. We had lots of new spectators
that came this year that didn't even know this hobby existed.
We also had many repeat customers that expect this event
every August. Each year this event grows larger, and it is a
real joy for all the great club members and pilots alike to
watch spectators spellbound by the capability of real remote
control jets.
We also have to thank all of the great news agencies that sent
out representatives before and during this exciting event.
They wrote some very flattering articles, and truly crystallized
what it is like at the New England Jet Rally. With their strength
in writing and membership we were able to get the word out
in a big way. Here is a link to the wonderful article written by
the Worcester Telegram and Gazette on what the event was
like on Saturday, August 20, 2011.
We also want to thank the pilots that came from all around the
United States and Canada. These great men and their
amazing flying machines came from Maine to Puerto Rico,
and even Canada, for this annual event. All of their jets use
real jet turbines burning either kerosene or jet fuel. Most of
them brought several jets, which cost from $5,000.00 -
40,000.00 each. Then there are the hundreds of hours they
spend to put them together and maintain them. Their passion
and dedication to creating and flying such amazing aircraft is
truly something to admire. They have spent years as the best
pilots that RC has to offer before they get into flying RC jets.
We also have to thank Jeff Lynds and his bride-to-be, Karen.
They are the individuals that coordinate all of the jet pilots to
come to the Gardner Municipal Airport each year, and so
much more. Go to our Jet Rally Special Thanks page to read
all about them and their great work.
The weather we had this year was just awesome. We did
unfortunately have some rain in the afternoon on Sunday, but
the pilots flew hard all day before that. You can’t control
mother nature, but someone must have been saying a few
prayers because earlier in the week it looked as if our event
might be washed out.
Each year during our planning of this event we try to make
improvements. This year we really changed around the
location of the concession tent, membership tent and
spectator viewing areas. We also put the parking lot closer to
the event, and we were able to have an improved
handicapped and motorcycle parking area. In fact, the
handicapped was right next to the airport taxi way, and just as
close as the spectator viewing area. These improvements
were a huge success, and we still saw room for
improvement. We want to make this event accessible to as
many people as possible.
